The work to bring passenger rail to Traverse City is off to a good start thanks to a quick crowdfunding effort that raised almost $19,000 in ten days.
This month, the Michigan Land Use Institute took first place in the Patagonia and Moosejaw “$10,000 Charity Thing," an annual crowdfunding competition among ten causes nationwide, and took home an additional $5,000 prize for a total of $18,650.
The money raised will help MLUI staff build support of government and business leaders in the cities between Traverse City and Ann Arbor—Kingsley, Cadillac, Mt. Pleasant, Alma, Durand, and Owosso—through a focused campaign that will include writing, public engagement, creative videography, and potential "demonstration" trains.
“The support for this project has been overwhelming,” said Hans Voss, MLUI executive director. “We’re so thankful for all the donations, and now we’re ready to get to work. It’s our vision that within 10 years, regular passenger service between Traverse City and Ann Arbor will be a reality.”
