In 1997 the Michigan Land Use Institute matured into an
effective public interest organization that is making a difference
for land, communities, and citizens in northern Michigan and
throughout the state.
The Institute is at the forefront of a historic movement that is establishing new tools for governing. We stress the need to invest public and private capital in areas that already are developed in order to reverse the land-wasting patterns of sprawling development. Numerous studies show it is better for communities to invest in Main Street businesses, modernize schools, and repair existing infrastructure instead of bulldozing natural landscapes for new gold-plated highways, subsidized cookie-cutter subdivisions, and shopping malls on the fringe.
Members of the Institute are essential to this crucial work,
which is funded solely by donations, grants, and fees for professional services. Each new member broadens our base of support and strengthens our ability to effectively represent the public interest.
If you already are a member, you can help us bring in more members. And if you are not yet a member, then join us! Every Institute member is entitled to:
• A subscription to theGreat Lakes Bulletin.
• Free copies of fact sheets and reports.
• Use of the Institute library.
• Access to a proven team of advocates who are ready to work on your behalf to answer questions, provide technical guidance, and conduct research.
The Michigan Land Use Institute believes that economic
advancement, environmental protection, curbing suburban sprawl, and investing in existing towns and cities are goals of equal priority. Common sense changes in public policy are the most enduring way for citizens to seize the opportunities of the hopeful new era unfolding before us.

Land Stewardship Program-- A research and grass
roots organizing project, undertaken in collaboration
with the Michigan Environmental Council, that seeks to
build a larger public constituency for new policies that
halt sprawl in Michigan.

magazine featuring in-depth news and thoughtful commentary on important land use issues, which serves as the basis of the Institute's overall communications program.
Special Reports--Thoroughly researched publications that explore land use issues of importance to Michigan.
