On June 19-20 former U.S. Secretary of the Interior Stewart L. Udall visited northwest Michigan and the
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which he co-founded in 1970. First up was a fund-raising banquet
for the Institute, held at the Waterfront Inn in Traverse City (above, right). Mr. Udall was introduced by
Howard A. Tanner, (abov, left), former director of the DNR under Gov. William G. Milliken.

The next day Mr. Udall toured the
national park for the first time. He visited
the Sleeping Bear overlook (left) and
hiked the Treat Farm trail with park
ranger Bill Herd (below right).

Mr. Udall told a standing-room only crowd who
turned out at a reception that afternoon, "I am
going to use one of my favorite words, one that I
don't often use to describe myself. I feel
exhilarated today." In almost every way, said Mr.
Udall, the park is a triumph, one of the most
richly diverse national parks in the United States.

Ellie MacDonald, and Penny Herd.
Thanks to all the following restaurants and shops
for donating to our dessert table: the Cherry Hut, the
Glenwood, Sail Inn, Brookside Inn, L'Chayim
Delicatessen, Stapleton's market, and East Shore
Market. Thanks also to Anita and Patrick Owen for
the heirloom variety cherries from Smeltzer Orchard,
to Shelley Szymanski for her beautiful flower boxes,

Benzonia Congregational Church for the use of their
glasses and dessert plates.
