New Economic Analyst to Focus on "Property Rights" Issue |

Patricia Cantrell,a journalist and economist, has joined the
Institute as a writer and grassroots organizer.
Patty will manage the Public Trust Alliance, a statewide project to
bring reasoned analysis to the currently reactionary "property rights"
issue. She also will contribute articles to the Great Lakes Bulletin,
write special reports, and assist with research and communications on
other Institute projects.
"Patty is a first-rate writer, a dogged researcher, and an original
thinker," said Keith Schneider, executive director. "She is extremely
talented, well-organized, and a wonderful addition to the staff."
Raised on a farm in the Missouri Ozarks, Patty graduated summa
cum laude from the University of Missouri, earning B.A. degrees in
economics and political science. She was awarded a Fulbright
Scholarship to study worker representation on Germany's corporate
boards in Cologne, Germany, and later earned a master's in business
administration from Drury College in Springfield, Missouri.
She began her career as an economic research associate at the
Rocky Mountain Institute, an international environmental policy think
tank based in Snowmass, Colorado. She later joined the Springfield
News-Leader as a senior business reporter and columnist, and won
the Exceptional Merit Media Award from the National Women's
Political Caucus and Radcliffe College. |

After leaving the newspaper, Patty wrote freelance articles for U.S. News & World Report and Ms.
Magazine, and taught business administration at Drury College. She is the author of a ground-breaking report for
the Missouri Rural Crisis Center on the hazards to family farmers and the environment of factory hog production.

Anne M. Stanton,a journalist and magazine editor,
has joined the staff as Managing Editor.
Anne will manage the planning, copyediting, presentation,
and promotion of the Great Lakes Bulletin and other Institute
publications, such as brochures, special reports, fact sheets,
membership letters, the Internet web site, and staff articles
written for newspapers and magazines.
"Anne is highly skilled and perceptive, with a keen
interest in the value of investigative journalism for benefiting
our society," said Keith Schneider, executive director.
"We are thrilled about the new dimension she will add to our
publications."
Anne was raised in Davison, Michigan. She worked her
way through the University of Michigan, receiving a bachelor's
degree in business administration and a master's in journalism.

Anne spent five years writing about the environment, education, and social policy for the Traverse City
Record-Eagle. She won the prestigious John F. Kennedy Award as a member of a Record-Eagle team reporting on
poverty in the Grand Traverse region. She also won awards from the Michigan Associated Press for her public
service reporting.
After leaving the Record-Eagle, Anne was a freelance writer for the Detroit Free Press, Michigan Monthly,
Hour Detroit, and Traverse Magazine. In 1993 she became editor of Prime Time News & Observer, a monthly
news magazine for senior citizens living in the Grand Traverse area.
Anne then worked as executive book editor and marketing specialist at the Jenkins Group, a publisher in
Traverse City, and was the founding review editor of ForeWord, a national trade magazine published in Traverse
City for independent bookstores. She also is the co-author of Publish to Win, a well-received guide on marketing
books to non-traditional markets.
Anne lives in Lake Ann with her husband, Doug Stanton, and their children Johnny, six, and Katie, three.G
