New Grants Awarded
The Institute received the following grants in the second half of 1997. The staff and Board of Directors wish
to express our deepest appreciation to these foundations and organizations for their genuine interest in and
support for our efforts on behalf of Michigan's communities.
• A $20,000 grant from the Ruth Mott Fund, to support the Michigan Energy Reform Coalition.
• Two grants totaling $12,000 from the Frey Foundation, for general support and to protect the Cedar
River in Antrim County.
• A $10,000 grant from the Borwell Charitable Foundation, for an Internet web site and "new media"
communications.
• Two grants totaling $6,000 from the Clannad Foundation, for general support and to assist grass roots
citizens groups.
• A $5,000 grant from the Alpern Foundation, for the Great Lakes Bulletin.
• A $425 grant from New Designs For Growth and the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce, for a
presentation by 1000 Friends of Oregon on alternative transportation and land use strategies.
