Judy Cunningham
Judy Cunningham, our administrative assistant, is a longtime Institute friend. In the early ‘90s, Judy supported the Institute’s successful drive to reform oil and gas drilling regulations. Then she set up recycling programs for school kids in Bear Lake, Brethren, Onekama, and Benzie County and convened 200 students for EarthSave, Manistee County’s first youth-oriented environmental conference. Last year, she worked hard on the campaign that stopped a coal-powered generating plant proposed for the City of Manistee; now she’s part of next June’s first-ever Manistee County Energy Fair.

Carolyn Kelly’
Carolyn Kelly’s byline may be familiar to you: She interned with us in the summer of ’04, before finishing her studies at the University of Chicago. After her internship with the Congress for the New Urbanism, we hired her as our associate editor, even though she was a French major. Perhaps it’s visions of Paris’ urban beauty that inspire her deep passion for land use and thriving cities. Carolyn helps edit www.mlui.org, is lead writer on our upcoming town center development guide and affordable housing project, and authored this summer’s smash-hit “Ready to Pick” column, at www.LocalDifference.org.

Jane Kowieski
Jane Kowieski is the Institute’s first-ever graphics assistant, brought in to help us meet our steadily increasing design and production needs. She has degrees in design and visual communications from Michigan State University and Northwestern Michigan College.

A veteran freelancer, Jane has done everything from teaching calligraphy to adults to managing production for one of Traverse City’s top graphic design studios. Her new affiliation with the Institute aligns her professional life with her convictions about Smart Growth and preserving natural resources.
